For me it is about stopping for a while, centering and getting in touch with my breath and my body. It is like coming home and remembering.
These days I try to sit down and meditate for anything between 5 minutes to half an hour a day, but just focusing mindfully for a few seconds here and there during the day is also very powerful.
A short break like that can be useful when we are rushing, when we are worried or when we are eating. Just take a breath, focus on what you are doing and where you are. Notice how your body is feeling and where your breath is at. That is all it takes.
I have started using a new meditation app this week. It is called Insight timer and I love it! There are normal timers which just ring a bell when the set time is up. Or you can add background music. My favourite is a slow "om" chanting.
There are also guided meditations from people like Eckhart Tolle and others that you might have heard about, as well as people who are new to me. They vary in length from a few minutes to an hour, so there is plenty of options depending on how much time you set aside.
BUT! The thing I almost love the most is that you can see how many people are using the app and meditating at the same time as you! Or, rather, when you are finished you can see how many people meditated with you. And you can also send them little messages saying: Thank you for meditating with me.
It is so beautiful. Knowing that so many people are sitting in stillness. Right at that moment. Focusing on peace, love, gratitude, or just on the breath. I love it.
Insight timer is available on android, but I am sure it can be found in the Apple store as well.
If you are new to meditation, or if you just want something new I really recommend you join this community!
See you there!
